I can call many students by surname.
I started every lesson in this week collecting the problems solved as homework, the filled questionnaire and the concept maps. Then, I read the results of the correction of the problems, name by name looking for the students and looking at her/his eyes, telling the errors, the good things found in some solutions, commenting about the few that reported the time spent on the task, etc.
After every lesson, I correct the homework, then I send them a message telling them the number of solutions that I have corrected, some advice, the material I have explained and I suggest the problems to be solved.
During the week I received 19 messages. Few excuse themselves because they cannot attend the lesson. A couple asked what I have done at lesson in a certain day. Some sent me the compiled test. The content of other messages:
− What are the products of the reaction between K2Cr2O7 and HCl?
− Thanks for the messages you sent to me, remember me what I have to study and the homework.
− An advice about the way I solved the problems, to have an indications about I have to cope with the problems in the future.
− When I can come to sustain the exam?
− How have I solved the problems today? Have you already correct them?
− When an organic compound burn down, with who he reacts?
35 students sent to me at least one message.
Monday 20: 1.5 hours.
I explained the oxidation number and showed some example about how to assign it to the compounds. Then we start to balance redox reactions.
I have collected 48 concept maps. The number of problems I have corrected from the previous lesson is 281 and the number of wrong solutions and results is 41.
A student get a ‘bonus’ because he has solved problem 5 in an original way, without using mathematical equations o other mathematical ‘tricks’.
Thursday 23: Two hours.
In about half an hour I explained the laws of the ideal and real gases. Then we solve few problems and I talked a bit about the importance, for being successful, to study ant to be motivated.
I have collected 14 concept maps. The number of problems I have corrected from the previous lesson is 476 and the number of wrong solutions and results is 15.
Friday 24: 4 hours.
In about forty minutes I explained the geometry of some molecules and the VESPR theory, the structure of hydrocarbons and benzene. Then we have balanced some redox reactions and solved some problems.
I have collected 23 concept maps. The number of problems I have corrected from the previous lesson is 318 and the number of wrong solutions and results is 23.
